Most of us assume the only way in or out is the automatic sliding doors in the front. Most people don’t even register the fact that there are several exits marked “emergency exit only, alarm will sound” or something to that effect.
During your grocery store visit, you probably went past several exits and never noticed. If something happened, like a fire or a shooting, almost everyone would automatically run toward the front door.
The scene would resemble a breached dam with all the water (people) flowing toward the most obvious way out, with stragglers becoming swept along in the rush.
The alternate exits along the way out would be ignored, simply because nobody consciously registered their existence.
As a concealed carry person, it’s useful to learn the skill of paying attention to other ways out. It’s just as important to become skilled at avoiding trouble knowing how to face it.
In his article “Mobs, Stampedes, and Public Disorder” at USConcealedCarry.com, Miguel Gonzalez mentions other exits that most of us wouldn’t consider:
“There are other exit points that are not commonly identified and that could save your life during a mob situation. To locate them, we must do some basic reconnaissance outside the building and seek other than the obvious exits. These alternative exits might be loading docks, store’s rear exits, employee entrances, delivery doors, and so on.
“Note where they are located and make sure they can provide a fast and safe escape. Are the cargo docks kept open all day or only opened during loading and unloading? Is the area outside the exit used for dumping trash and parking trucks or is it clear of obstacles? Is the door locked, blocked, or barred? (Read the full article here...)
