Most people have some basic supplies on hand to ride out a short-term power outage or water shortage, but after a few days, batteries go dead, propane lanterns run out, and things start to look a little bleak.
Now, Streamlight, Inc. has introduced a product that may have practical applications when Mother Nature comes calling.
The Streamlight Portable Scene Light (PSL) for law enforcement and rescue personnel is designed to light areas where a local power supply or generator aren’t readily available. The PSL’s versatility quickly makes it apparent that the light could serve a purpose with civilians as well.
The PSL is equipped with three illumination levels; a 5-hour 3600 lumen high beam, a 2400 medium beam that last for 9 hours, and a low beam that still brings an 1100 lumen beam that will keep shining for 18 hours to the table.
Yet the Streamlight PSL isn’t just a giant flashlight. The light pole can be extended to 72 inches, and as Scott W. Wagner explains in his article “The Streamlight Portable Scene Light-Compact Rechargeable Lighting System: Supplemental Lighting—at Home or on the Range” at USConcealedCarry.com, the height provides the PSL user with a variety of options:
“This means it can light a broad area, such as the interior or exterior of a home during an extended power outage, or even a private– or backyard-shooting range for some low-level-light shooting practice. The applications are unlimited.” (Read more at USConcealedCarry.com)
The Streamlight PSL operates on either AC or DC and is capable of running off a car battery or generator, although it does pull a lot of current. The charging system is fairly standard, employing a red indicator light while the unit is charging and a green one when it is fully charged.
The light head itself has several options besides the intensity settings. There is a diffuser dial that adjusts the beam’s focus for general or precision work. The PSL head can even maneuver 90 degrees to project light into those nooks and crannies that never seem to get enough light. The light stand is extremely stable, with 3 folding legs that extend out at 45 degree angles.
The Streamlight PSL’s portability and easy deployment (30 seconds) make it a strong candidate for a survival kit or part of a home defense plan. It also has many recreational and practical uses like camping, night range practice, and other outdoor activities where even or focused lighting is required.
At $579, the PSL is a bargain. It provides a myriad of lighting options for many low-light scenarios. In addition to that, this light goes almost anywhere from wide open spaces to dim, cramped corners.
