There are many instances where you might not want to make it known, or even relatively obvious, that you are carrying. Many people might not think it's the best idea, or even respect the fact that you’re carrying a weapon. For instance, if you are in a situation where children are present, that gun is going to seem scary to anyone involved.
However, if you feel you need to be carrying, there are ways to do it while making it a more comfortable situation for all.
The first thing you'll want to think about with a touchy concealed carry situation is the type of threat that you may encounter.
In most situations, attackers are looking for the best opportunity which isn't likely going to be at a family party or church gathering. Regardless, the risk and chance of something occurring is always there.
Your best bet is to rely on what is most comfortable for you. If concealed carry is easiest for you with an ankle holster, stick with it. If you prefer a pocket holster or a shoulder holster, use them. Also keep in mind that there are some smaller pistols that you can use that make carrying even more discreet.
In some cases, you can carry inside your waistband. Some pistols are small enough to conceal on a necklace chain, as well – discretion is always key.
When it comes to your concealed carry preferences, it's best for you to remain comfortable, and stay with the gun and ammo that is most comfortable for you. You need to make it work for any given situation. Of course, there is always the option of not carrying when the situation doesn't seem right. Take all options into consideration and choose the one you feel is best.
Rich Grassi explains extreme concealed carry in his article “Deep Cover: Extreme Concealment When You Need It” on USConcealedcarry.com:
"If it’s legal for you to do so, carry a gun. Smart money is to carry the biggest most powerful gun you can manage, given your situation. If you have to go to an event or location where the discovery of your gun might create problems, either don’t go or learn how to carry in extreme concealment. That can be pocket or ankle carry, over the neck in a chest holster–it could be “off-body” in some kind of discreet carrier—you don’t need to be unarmed.” (Read more about discrete concealed carry methods here.)
