Glock manufactures other .45 caliber semi-automatic pistols like the full-size Model 21 and the much smaller Model 36 “slimline,” but the 30S seems to have emerged as the just right “Goldilocks” model.
It’s become increasingly popular in the concealed carry community is winning over new aficionados, bringing them into the Glock brand circle.
The Glock 30S falls into the subcompact category, featuring a smaller grip and thinner slide than the Model 30, yet still incorporates double-stack 10 round magazines. This gives the shooter a potential of 21 rounds of .45 caliber stopping power. Although the double-stack makes the 30S a little wider, it also gives the 30S a more ergonomic grip that increases the comfort level while shooting. In addition to that, the 10-round magazines extend further than other Glock subcompacts, allowing for a stronger, full-handed grip.
Having an extra magazine does present some issues for the 30S owner, however. If you decide to keep one mag in your pocket, you will quickly determine that it’s quite heavy and unwieldy, leaving a distinctive print. Yet as author Mark Kakkuri points out in his article “Glock 30S” at USConcealedCarry.com, carrying a fully loaded 30S is not always the most optimal mode:
“One minor annoyance, though. The magazines for the Glock 30S hold 10 rounds of .45 Auto, but not easily. Round number 10 requires a bit more thumb strength or the magazine loading tool to squeeze it in.” (Read more at USConcealedCarry.com)
A .45 handgun can be tough to handle in any size, but it’s a particular challenge in the subcompact category. Glock has mitigated the issue somewhat in the 30S with a steep grip angle that provides support while shooting. The heavy slide spring and low bore axis design also help to lessen the recoil.
During range testing, the 30S consistently produced .75” and 1.25” groupings at 5 and 15 yards respectively. For speed testing at the same distances, the groupings were at respectable 4.75 and 5.75 inch margins.
The Glock 30S is a serious weapon and with a potential 21 round ammo load, it has serious firepower. However, the 30S isn’t going to be for everyone. Those who can handle it will find a way to use it not only as a concealed carry firearm, but as a home defense weapon as well.
