This is the Smith & Wesson SW1911Sc, a Commander-style single-action 1911 handgun.
The “Sc” indicates a Scandium alloy frame that is lighter and stronger than any aluminum alloy, causing the weapon to be more expensive than most aluminum alloy 1911’s.
The amount of Scandium used in the SW1911Sc is minimal, but the difference it makes at the end of the day is huge. As author George Hill explains in his article “Smith & Wesson SW1911Sc” at USConcealedCarry.com, carrying a 1911 is like driving a luxury automobile:
“Nothing stands out, but the sum of all the qualities is greater than the parts. Like a BMW. Nothing all that fantastic about any one aspect of your given BMW automobile, but it is a well-balanced car with all the right qualities in all the right places that makes it such a fantastic car.” (Read more at USConcealedCarry.com)
One nice perk that Smith & Wesson added to the SW1911Sc and other E-series models is an over-sized shell extractor as well as their combat-style ejection port. Misfires and jams are a rarity with this firearm.
As far as accuracy, the SW1911Sc performed as expected. At 45 feet, groupings within the nine-ring or better with the 8-round magazine being the norm. Having the ability to carry the lightweight Scandium Commander all day without much effort takes its toll at the other end -- recoil. Although the recoil is manageable, there is a measurable difference in the kickback compared to a standard 1911.
The light Scandium alloy frame is just one feature that makes the Smith & Wesson SW1911Sc an outstanding concealed carry weapon. The bobtail design cuts off about .75 inches from the standard configuration but makes the gun “snag-free.” Printing is also negligible.
One feature the SW1911Sc lacks is night sights. If you are going to use this gun as a concealed carry weapon, adding tritium sights is a necessity in this day and age.
Be prepared for sticker shock when shopping for the Scandium alloy Commander. The SW1911Sc prices out about 10-15 percent higher than other 1911’s on the market. This translates to a price of about $1300, although there are most certainly bargains to be found online. For a lighter, more comfortable carry that maintains the power and accuracy of a standard 1911 .45 ACP, check out the Smith & Wesson SW1911Sc.
